Get on the water

SUP or kayak, these are the eight spots I actually paddle — desert lakes, Rim Country escapes, and the river that started it all.

Watch first · Salt River series

Part 1

Paddling the Lower Salt River

Wild horses, desert canyon views, and everything you need to know before your first float.

Part 2

Salt River, Round Two

The rest of the story — more river, more tips, more reasons to get out here.

My go-to spots

01

Salt River My #1

My #1, hands down. Wild horses, incredible scenery, a relaxing float. Go with someone who knows the river your first time: launch points, flow & shuttle logistics matter.

Canyon Lake · Boulder Rec Area

Where I tell almost every beginner to start. Calm water, gorgeous canyon views, easy launch, perfect confidence-builder.

03

Saguaro Lake · Butcher Jones

Beautiful desert scenery with coves to explore. Go early to beat the boats — one of the prettiest paddles near Phoenix.

04

Bartlett Lake

Open water and quiet coves. Sunrise paddles here are especially peaceful.

Lake Pleasant

Huge, with endless room to explore. Best on calm mornings before boat traffic picks up.

Woods Canyon Lake

The summer escape. Heading to the Rim? Cooler temps and pine trees instead of cactus.

Willow Springs Lake

Another fantastic Rim Country paddle. Clear water, forest views, a totally different feel from the desert lakes.
